Am I the only one that, when thinks of chainsaws, they immediately think of a horror movie? The Texas Chainsaw Massacre anyone? Only me? Bummer. Either way, being equipped with one of the best chainsaws on the market is going to alleviate some serious labor work. No one wants to take an axe to wood anymore unless you’re in one of those burly lumberjack dudes; chainsaws are just simply more efficient.
Chainsaws are available in a variety of different sizes from small, corded and cordless electric to the super powerful gas-powered models allowing for the truly heavy duty work. Generally speaking, the prices of a chainsaw are directly related to the engine size on gas, the voltage for electric motors, and the cutting-bar length. While a gas chainsaw may be more powerful overall, it isn’t always practical. Electric chainsaws are quite capable of getting every-day cutting done.
With electric chainsaws, you can expect less runtime than it’s gas powered competitor. However, most people may have a single branch fall down, and that’s where the electric thrives. If you’re not trying to cut an entire tree, you don’t need a long runtime. You can also expect significantly less maintenance as you don’t have to worry about spark plugs, mixing gas, etc.
When considering the right model for you personally, make sure you are taking into account how much you will be using the chainsaw. You don’t want to spend a huge chunk of change on something you’re barely going to use. With that said, we have put together a list of the best chainsaws of 2018 for your viewing pleasure.

The WORX WG303.1 electric chainsaw is choice as best overall chainsaw, and it was a fairly easy decision. When testing the WORX, we experienced similar cutting abilities to that of gas-powered chainsaws. It is equipped with a 14.5 amp motor allowing for this. The WG303.1 has a 16” cutting-bar.
The WORX electric chainsaw has a patented auto-tension chain system that will prevent over-tightening. An over-tightened chainsaw could risk it popping off of the cutting blade, or poor performance. The auto-tension system maintains the perfect tension for hundreds of uses. It also has a chain brake for added safety. We know how many people are scared of their chainsaws.
Keep in mind that the WORX is indeed electric. However, it doesn’t require a battery. It is a corded chainsaw. You need to ensure that you have optimal length extension cords when purchasing this. It has automatic oil lubrication, as well as a built-in oil reservoir with a window level indicator ensuring that you know when a fill-up is needed. Maintaining the oil on the chains is important in both it’s performance, and lifespan.
The BLACK+DECKER LCS1020 electric chainsaw is powered by a lithium ion battery allowing for an extended life, and runtime. You can expect the chainsaw to be charged up to 5x longer than standard batteries.
Equipped with a 10” premium Oregon low kickback bar, and chain, you can expect safer use when operating this electric chainsaw. While it is safe, it is also extremely easy to adjust. It offers a tool-free blade tension system. No more having to buy additional tools to adjust the product you bought two days ago.
With certain chainsaws, oiling the chains can be a pain. With the BLACK+DECKER LCS1020, you can expect an auto-oiling system with a primer button as well as a window to gauge the oil level.
While it does have a battery, and may not last as long as a gas, or corded chainsaw, those both have cons to them. I can’t be the only one that has found themselves constantly tripping over cords. They’re just a pain in the ass. You don’t have to worry about purchasing an extension cord, either. With the LCS1020 electric chainsaw, all you need is the charging station which is included.
The second BLACK+DECKER on our list is the LCS1240 electric chainsaw. This too, is powered by a Lithium Ion 40V MAX battery. This is where most of the increased price comes from. It is twice as powerful as the LCS1020.
With the additional power of the LCS1240 electric chainsaw, you can expect better cutting performance when focusing on larger logs. On a single charge, it is capable of cutting through 60 4×4 logs. A SINGLE CHARGE! It is capable of being bought without the lithium ion battery, for those of you that already have one.
Equipped with a 12” Oregon low-kickback bar, and chain as well as a tool-free chain tensioning adjuster, you can expect a safe, and easy-to-use chainsaw. The BLACK+DECKER LCS1240 aims for efficiency in its cuts, and boy does it deliver. Equipped with automatic-lubrication of the chain as well, which is to not be overlooked.
The first gas-powered chainsaw on our list, is the Husqvarna 240. This baby is powered by a 2 HP, 38cc 2-stroke engine giving it an incredibly efficient cut. It has a maximum power speed of 9000 RPMs, and an idling speed of 3000 RPM.
When considering a gas-powered chainsaw, you’re probably looking for a bit more heavy-duty option. Electric chainsaws aren’t capable of cutting through larger wood. With a 16” cutting-bar, a ⅜” pinch, and a 050-inch gauge, you can expect an extremely powerful cut with the Husqvarna 240 chainsaw.
One of the concerns we had with this gas-powered chainsaw, is the cheaper feeling start switch, and choke lever. They are constructed with a very cheap plastic, and if hit the wrong way from an accidental bump, you can expect it to pop off. So, when you’re using this chainsaw, make sure you are careful of your surroundings.
The GreenWorks 20312 electric chainsaw is tied with most expensive (see Poulan Pro) in our reviews of best chainsaws of 2018. While it may be electric, capable of being powered by an immensely powerful, newly implemented Lithium Ion 40V MAX battery. This electric chainsaw is aiming to provide a near gas-powered cut; and, boy is it close.
With the power of the DigiPro brushless motor, you can expect up to 100 cuts on a single battery charge. Both the 4AH battery, and charger are included. It is completely compatible with the G-MAX 40V Lithium Ion battery system, so if you have other GreenWorks products, you may use their batteries in this product.
The DigiPro brushless motor of the electric chainsaw offers up to 30% extra torque, increasing the cutting performance. The design of this also reduces the vibration by 70% allowing for extra comfort, and even more precision. The chain brake, and low kickback-bar offer increased safety when operating.
The Remington RM1425 is our choice as best budget in our reviews of best chainsaws of 2018. Equipped with a 8-amp electric motor, you can experience a powerful trimming. The compact, and lightweight design allow for an easy-to-use chainsaw when trimming smaller branches, and limbs. We do not recommend using it for anything larger than limbs, or small branches as it isn’t powerful enough. But, it is certainly better than a hand-saw.
The 14-inch low-kickback bar and chain allow for a super safe use. With a push-button oiler, you can maintain the chain’s lubrication easily. It will ensure that you aren’t over-lubricating your chain as well. The Remington RM1425 electric chainsaw also has an external chain tensioner, allowing for easy adjustment without the use of additional tools.
If on a budget, and need something to increase your efficiency when trimming your trees, this electric chainsaw is the perfect fit for you. Stop using that super inconvenient hand-saw, and indulge yourself with some modern-day technology.
The Earthwise CS30116 electric chainsaw is middle of the pack. It isn’t as powerful as our top picks, but has a slightly cheaper price point. It is developed with a 12-amp motor (120/60hz) that is capable of offering a plenty powerful cut for everyday use, on smaller branches.
It has a few added safety features. These include a plastic bar, and chain cover ensuring you don’t accidentally cut yourself while the chainsaw is put away. It also has a safety start button protecting you when starting the electric chainsaw.
With a compact, and lightweight design, as well as an automatic oiling system, the Earthwise CS30116 electric chainsaw is among the easiest product to use. Expect very little fatigue when operating for hours at a time. The automatic lubrication system ensures that your chain will stay healthy, and provide you with a healthy cut, or trim.
The second gas chainsaw, and most powerful in our review of best chainsaws of 2018, is the Poulan Pro 50cc. This incredible specimen has a 2-stroke engine, and is engineered with Poulan Pro’s own spring-assisted Effortless Pull-Start System (EPS), decreasing the amount of times you have to pull the cord on startup.
With OxyPower engine tech, you are receiving extra power allowing you to complete any task around the yard. Do you have fallen trees? Too big of firewood? It doesn’t matter, the Poulan Pro gas chainsaw has it covered. The technology, while offering more power, also reduces engine emissions by 70%, and reduces fuel consumption by 20%.
The purge bulb, that provides the carburetor with gas, is protected ensuring it’s safety so that you won’t require any extra maintenance due to it being gas-powered. This is also what allows for the EPS technology to work. With fewer pulls, there will be a reduction in potential engine damage, or flooding.
The TIMBERPRO gas-powered chainsaw is a doozy. Powered by a 62cc air-cooled 2-stroke engine, it offers incredible efficiency in cutting. With a 20” cutting bar, you can expect a wide range of movement when trying to cut through the most difficult of wood.
It is equipped with an alloy starting mechanism, and assisted start technology ensuring less pulls are needed to start the gas-powered engine. With less pulls, the risk of flooding or damaging the engine is significantly reduced allowing for a longer product life.
The TIMBERPRO gas chainsaw comes with a storage, and carrying bag as well as two additional chains. This is a huge value when considering the already low price of the chainsaw. Depending on the chain you buy, they can become extremely expensive. This chainsaw, like the others, has automatic oil lubrication. This will allow your chain to maintain its effectiveness, and increase its longevity.
The Poulan Predator gas-powered chainsaw is the little brother to the Poulan Pro. It offers less power, but is significantly more inexpensive. With the 42cc, 2-stroke engine, you can expect it to be able to cut through any fallen limbs, or branches in your yard. If you are looking for something more heavy duty, to disassemble trees, we recommend it’s big brother.
With an 18” cutting-bar, and automatic lubrication, you will be introduced to a new kind of longevity. Lubrication is often overlooked, and it shouldn’t be. The automatic lubrication will ensure that all the friction that is happening between the chain, and bar, will not cause significant damage to the chainsaw. You can’t drive your car without oil; similarly, you can’t use your chainsaw without oil.
Overall, it is on the bottom of our best chainsaws of 2018 due to the lack of features it is equipped with, while still maintaining a higher price point. You are capable of buying electric chainsaws with similar power, and less required maintenance. If you’re against electric totally, though, the Poulan Predator gas-powered chainsaw is a great buy.
